Don’t Forget Your Summer Reading !!

Welcome 7th grade class of 2008-2009!  I know you are all as excited as I am to be returning to school soon.  Hope you are reading your summer novel. For those of you interested in a little guidance, the following link is a Dragonwings Study Guide. You DO NOT have to fill out the study guide–it’s simply there to assist your thinking about the novel in preparation for discussions that will take place in class.

Join the Discussion!

A few of you participated in the discussion blog hosted by Marblehead over Spring Break. From here until the end of the Unit, in place of Strong Verb paragraphs, your assignment will be to post a comment to your designated group. I’d like you to use your Google Aps account and invite me on each of your posts–then copy/paste your post to Marblehead’s Blog. Below are the two links you will need (I’ve also placed them in the Blogroll):

Body Image Project Discussion–Culture Definitions

What did you think of today’s activity? Was it difficult to find the images you wanted? Do you think American society pressures people of color to meet “traditionally white” standards of beauty? Do African-American women need to straighten their hair to be beautiful? Do Mexican-American women need to “tone down” their curves? Do African-American men need to be athletes? Do Mexican-American men need to speak with sexy accents?

How about within the cultures themselves? Will members of a particular race exclude members if they appear to be attempting to meet a conceptualized “white” standard?

Body Image Project Discussion–Gender Mixup Activity

You may comment any time before 9:00 p.m, but the “live” portal will be open from 7:00-8:00.

Remember to refresh often so that you can see new comments as they come in.

What was it like thinking about the pressures placed on the opposite gender? How do you think this will help you think about body image in the years ahead? Have changed your opinions about your own expectations? Have you gained any sympathy for men and women and the standards they attempt to live up to?
