Activity Challenge III Health/Food Advertising

Talk about today–what similarities did the groups notice in the way advertisers target audience who are interested in health and nutrition?

Why does it make sense for the general public to begin noticing the methods advertisers use?

After the completion of this unit, do you think you will be more cautious about buying any items based soley upon advertising?

  • Based on today’s challenges, it is simple to see why advertisers advertise specific elements to go with health foods and medicines. My group came up with the idea that health advertisements use sports in their ads. We thought this was because of the whole idea that if you eat their product, you will be as athletic and healthy as they are in the picture.

Also, adding on to last night’s comment, we are all different and we need to respect that. It is a complicated world, and many people’s backgrounds are more interesting than we could ever imagine. We process thoughts differently and speak different languages, but really, we are all the same. Racism is horrible because people are placed into catagories that they may be the exact opposite of, and the insults hurt people and make them feel like they are from another planet. If everyone was the same, the world would not be interesting.

It makes sense for the methods that advertisers use because the draw attention and make their product interesting. It could very well be a cough medicine they are advertising with pictures of people at a disco.

I believe I will be a lot more cautious because just because something is advertised in a cool way does not technically mean it is a good product. Also, due to false advertising, in my opinion, people should lower their expectations for commercial products.

  • The event thingy was really fun today. Just saying. If you haven’t noticed, Nutrisystem uses famous athletes to advratise their products. This is to put it on the level of “I always loved that guy, I wanna be just like him.”
    It makes sense.

  • My Dad always says,”Keep your expectations low, and you’re never disappointed.”

  • Anyone still on?

  • I think that when people advertise a weight loss program or medication they make it sound like it is “fast” or “easy” when it may not be. Those two key words seem to “sell” the product really quickly because they say that the product does not take any time or effort.

  • Today’s challenge and all the other challenges so far have definitely showed a different side of the media than i have ever seen before.

  • I agree with David that when people are selling a sports drink they use famous sports players. So you think hey if I drink this then I’ll be healthy and play sports well, just like them.

  • Casey I agree and I think they advertise it to be easy because lots of people dont want to have to work for it

  • I agree with Damon they show the evil, luring, dishonest side. They don’t show the happy, luring, nice side.

  • I agree with David and your whole groups idea with how food is incorporated with food advertisements. Also, when the food isn’t very good for you, but they show athletes with it, they think they won’t be eating food bad for them. Although most people could realize the basics of good for you and bad for you.

  • Yeas many people think oh that takes work so I don’t want to do it, too much work.

  • I agree with Chris. And I don’t understand why sports figures would try to sell stuff that is bad for you. Maybe for the money$.

  • Because they want you to fell good and be sporty, don’t they?

  • Money makes the world go round. Really when you think about it famous people only want two things, fame and money.

There are people who don’t fit that description but still, in this crazy world money is everything.

  • Great conversation got to go!

  • What Casey said about weight programs showing how easy things our, that was our group’s stereotype (we didn’t really finish it, though). Lots of weight loss programs say how easy things are. But for lifting weights, it’s hard no matter what! Unless the weights were really light, but then they wouldn’t be weights. I think what they mean when they say their program is easy, that it’s less work to lose weight. The work’s still hard, but it’s shorter. But again, if it’s someone really weak, then it’s going to take them lots of time working out to get strong muscles.

  • Yes I agree wit David that is so sad. I would want people to be healthy (and I would want fame and money)!

  • I completely agree with David about money. Drifting a bit off topic, but looking at history, just about everything was for power and money. Nowadays, fame was added in.

  • I agree with how Chris said that weight loss is never easy. But “fake”weight loss is like pills and stuff.

  • By the way, Americans have an obsession with time saving technology. This techno-worship is exactly why we need weight loss things to begin with. It is also why people will only do easy things

  • I wonder if those pills really work. They seem dangerous.

  • They make you puke and poop, that is what they do.

  • Okay, thanks David I really needed to know that.

  • I’m serious, that is all they do. Isn’t that horrible?

Some make you eat less, but that is just as bad.

  • Lots of artificial are used today. In lots of sci-fi futuristic books or movies, they have crazy technology. Some are like having a ‘virtual’ reality. We don’t know if we’ll ever have it (I doubt it), but it was giving a artificial LIFE. Think about how changes like that could affect people’s lives, and how the way of life has changed.

  • Sorry Casey, I just speak the truth.

  • That is really bad. People should try to loss weight the real way and actually have to work at something, or in a way you are kind of cheating.

  • Yeah, some people starve themselves to lose weight.

  • Back to Chris, I would hate to have a artificial life. You wouldn’t even be living.

  • Starving yourself is not a healthy way to loose weight, it is just really stupid.

  • Huh….Well I try not to think that deep but now that I have I remember the food pyramid story Mr. Tucker told us.

The food pyramid was supposed to be a marketing gimmick, truthful but made to confuse and convey the wrong message.

  • Yea, that was mean of those guys to trick us into being unhealthy just for money$.

  • Good thing to bring up David. That was good false advertising, and they knew it the whole time.

  • I there another chat we need to do or something?

  • I think they were being mean and selfish to try to make us fat for their profit.

  • Good that while we’re kids we know the right way with the pyramid.

  • Fat is whack….wait that doesn’t really rime.

  • What do you mean by that David.

  • David, the other chat we can do is with the 8th graders, for extra credit.

  • Nice discussion guys, don’t forget, if you’d like to move over to the 8th grade blog, you can earn a few extra credit points.

  • Yea good thing Chris. except for that day we did the food chart in science you had like 10 sweets in one day!

  • Being fat is bad. I was trying to make a joke and failed at it.

Thank you Chris. I may go do that.

  • Okay I am going to the 8th grade blog for extra credit. bye!

  • Yeah, but Mr. Tucker gave them to us!

  • I’m leaving for 8th grade blog.

  • Wow, I’m kind of upset, I missed the whole discussion. Towards the beginning I noticed Casey and Damon talking about the evil dishonest side, and it makes me wonder if things like that were advertised in the most joyful and happy way possible they would be more sucessful.

  • I am not sure about the successful thing. I believe I would buy more products if people were more honest.

  • I agree with Damon that i saw a diffrent part of the media. I like greta’s comment about the joyfulness and happiness of commercials. Sorry for posting so late (internet down)
