Paganism?

What do you think about Lucy’s and Naduah’s discussions about religion?  Is Lucy beginning to question her own beliefs? Why or why not? (Support your thoughts with passages from the text) What do you think about Naduah’s compliance with reciting biblical Psalms? Do you think that Naduah is beginning to doubt her beliefs? Why or why not? (Support your thoughts with passages from the text)

  • I think she might be doubting her believes because of the fact that she was brought up differently than everyone else around her,
during the comversation something that was said was “I won’t say anything because she is so innocent” which I think is a very arrogant comment to make.

  • I think that at one part Lucy questioned a part of Indian culture that was very different that Christianity, and that made Naduah ran away.
    (this is long)
This is from Where the Broken Heart still Beats: “How can you believe that, Cynthia Ann? Those Nermernuh that you love so much killed most of your family! And they kidnapped you and your brother and other people, too! Surely you remember that? And what about what happened to you after they captured you? If you rememered what they did to you and your family, I do not think you would love them so much, even if you did marry one”(84-85).

(This is very similar to my comment on the other mega challenge blog.)

  • I spelled remembered wrong sorry!

  • No problem

  • Gavin I was saying that for Mrs. G. Now back to the subject; what do you think about Naduah’s compliance with reciting biblical Psalms? I think if you read them and understand them THEN they are worth something.

  • Yeah if you read anything a lot it can be meaningful to most people.

  • I remember reading some books sometimes, when I was really tired. I reread it when I’m not and it’s completely new. Naduah probably remembers the verses but does not find meaning for them, and even if she does then she compares it with her gods and important things in life. Lucy says “She might recite the 23rd Psalm word for word when Grandfather asks her to, but when he says, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not wait,” it is not our God shie is thinking about. It is the Great Spirit, or the sun, or the buffalo, or some such”(83).

  • I spelled she wrong sorry! These keyboards are very difficult to type on.

  • Lucy does not know whether Paganism is sinful. For example were Christian and we Don’t look at Jewish people being sinful, they are just different. Those people look at Pagansim being sinful, but Lucy questions if that is fair

  • Exactly, I agree. Remember that discussion we had in class and Mrs. Gutierrez said that Lucy wanted to ask her parents but she thinks she is not old enough. As Lucy says, “I knew Mama and Pap would not approve of our talking about these pagan ideas, and I was glad Martha was not there to hear”(82). She thinks when she brings up pagan ideas, it destroys the white culture learning she has been given, so she can’t talk about anything ‘pagan’ with her.

  • Yeah I remember that conversation. Chris do you think that she is old enough? Personally I don’t think she is.
And I agree with the idea that Lucy can not talk to Naduah about her culture.

  • Yes I think she is old enough.
