America Street Discussion

After having read the stories and played our board-game, think about the way in which each of the stories contains some type of cultural significance for its readers. What is the author trying to make us aware of? Why did he or she choose to write the story and why did he or she choose to portray the characters the way he or she does.

  • Raymond’s run I think is kind of sad. Because hazel has to give up her dream of running so she can caoch raymond. But it’s also good because she gets a brand new dream which give her a pourpose and it gives raymond one to.

  • The All American Slurp- I thought the All American Slurp was good because I sounded like what my dad had to go through.

  • I THOUGHT THAT THANYOU M’AM WAS THE MOST MEANINGFUL. A WOMEN HELPING A BOY WAS A GOOD INFLUENCE.

  • I agree with Ryan the story is sad but at the same time the story is showing that one sacrifice can lead to somthing good for someone else.

  • James’s comment is strange becuase I kind of can see how it’s strange beacause it’s from a different country and getting used to how things work in America.

  • One of my favorite stories was The All-American Slurp. I thought that the cultural aspect of the story was very well thought through. I think that the Gleason’s and the Lee’s really helped each other out with the cultural differences. Also I saw how different the Chinese and the American culture can be. I think the author chose to write this to make people appreciate how hard it can be to move to a different culture with different customs.

  • I think that Raymond’s Run is about how Squeaky succeedes all the time and then she sees someone who no one in society thinks can do anything and she sees him secceeding.

  • The story I chose was 6th grade. The cultural signifigance of the story is the fact that everyone who lives in this country came from somewhere else in this world, and that there were many problems that came with moving.

  • I that All American Slurp is is about how hard it can be to be in a differant place when your not used to and how its embarrasing to be in a country with differant traddishins and cultures. -NOT DONE-

  • In the story Thank You Ma’m there is a boy who tries to snatch a woman’s purse. The lady

  • I AGREE WITH RYAN D THE STORY IS ABOUT GIVING SOMTHING UP TO HELP SOMONE ELSE.

  • Hello, chums! I thought that La Ciramella was a good story. It was about an Italian family. The parents had immigrated from Italy, but the children (two girls) were born in the U.S. The author wants us to get a feel for what it’s like to have to move to another country, and leave everything behind. The author chose this way to show his meaning, by using a musical instrument that he misses from his home country. I really liked the story!

  • I agree with Rachel. The author really tried to get a meaningful lesson across.

  • One of the stories that I read was No Guitar Blues. It was about a boy who wanted a guitar so much that he lied about saving a dog to get money. He felt bad and gave the money to a church. It was the best story I read. I also agree with Katey. That was what the story was about.

  • I think America street goes from another culture and back to ours. This helps us learrn a little about others culture, and shows that other cultures have to learn about our many cultures in this country. In conclusion geography is an important subject because it teaches you about other cultures. The Lins had to learn american culture, and when they got comfortable with the culture they tought their neighbors abot their culture.

  • I agree with Sam about how hard it is to get accustomed to the tradtions and the culture of another country.

  • I AM COMMENTING ON RECHEL’S COMMENT, I DISAGREE COMPLETLY, 6TH GRADE IS THE BEST.

  • I thought Thank You Ma’m was a very good story because it taught how stealing was bad and even though the boy tried to snatch the woman’s purse she still gave him cake and gave him money to buy blue suede shoes.

  • I agree whith Sam how it is hard to fit in sometimes in a new country.

  • I agree with James about how its hard but i also think that its very sad how someone would have to go through something really hard just to try and get a better life.

  • I think bussiness of eleven is good story becsuse he is not abanoment he’s dream and his mother died but he also
has his dream so I think tnis story give me teaching.

  • I agree with Hannah. I think it is sad to try to leave for a new country and missing things from your old country.
