Watch this short clip about the Happy to be Nappy Series I mentioned in class today (disregard the other videos linked to it, as many are not appropriate and viewing is not condoned):
Then, use this space to discuss today’s challenge or your reactions to the clip. Have you ever noticed how some advertisers target audiences based upon race or perceived socio-economic (how much money a particular group is thought to make) status? Was it harder to participate in today’s challenge for fear of appearing racist yourselves? Explain.
BE SURE TO PROOFREAD, SPELL CHECK and USE COMPLETE SENTENCES.
Don’t forget to also respond to someone else’s comment(s).

What was it like thinking about the pressures placed on the opposite gender? How do you think this will help you think about body image in the years ahead? Have changed your opinions about your own expectations? Have you gained any sympathy for men and women and the standards they attempt to live up to?
First assignment is to watch T.V. or look at some form of print media and evaluate the images/hidden messages. In a comment for this post, describe the advertisement or image and then talk about the potential messages/tricks used. Be sure to also respond to someone else’s post. What I am NOT looking for is, a response that says, “Yeah–I saw that one too. That was cool or really funny!” What I am looking for is for you to evaluate one another’s thinking about the images.
Post your first paragraph as a comment, then check back to see what others have written and take a minute to comment on one or two of your classmates’ posts. In particular, check to make sure they have thesis statements and that they have chosen thesis statements that are specific enough for the assignment. A poor example of a thesis statement for this paper would be one that is too general such as: “The Civil War had a big impact on America.”
You will have an opportunity to revise your paragraph before submitting it on the final draft, so really take advantage of your classmates’ suggestions.
The following link will take you to a website that is loaded with information on the topic of captivity novels. What I find interesting is the fact that “captivity narratives” as a genre is mostly attributed to North American settings during colonial times. In addition, the main characters are almost always female and Native Americans are almost always the captors. However, look at what Ms. Campbell suggests under the category of “Rhetorical Purposes.” Discuss the ways in which our novel confirms or negates some of these purposes. Click here.
What do you think about Lucy’s and Naduah’s discussions about religion? Is Lucy beginning to question her own beliefs? Why or why not? (Support your thoughts with passages from the text) What do you think about Naduah’s compliance with reciting biblical Psalms? Do you think that Naduah is beginning to doubt her beliefs? Why or why not? (Support your thoughts with passages from the text)
Discuss your feelings for Naduah and Lucy. What makes each of them “kind or good or sympathetic” characters. What makes them “unkind, unsympathetic, cruel” characters. Because this is a “discussion” you must post your own thoughts as well as respond to others.
Post your facts with appropriate in-text citation. Make your facts direct quotes from a reliable source. Your in-text citation should reflect the first element of a potential works cited.
Directions: Think about the list of possible persuasive topics we discussed in class (i.e., video games, cell phones, Internet usage, etc.). Come up with three different thesis statements about a persuasive topic (your statements can be about anything–even those topics not on our list).
Then, evaluate one another’s statements. Do you feel as though someone’s thesis statement is too vague or general? Do you feel like one is really intriguing? Do you feel as though the language of a particular statement needs some revision?
Respond to at least one thesis statement posted by someone else.
